Bluegrass Riding Academy - Riding Lesson Programs

Horse in barn with young student riders

The Bluegrass Riding Academy invites riders of all ages, beginner through advanced, to learn about the American Saddlebred Horse by taking saddle seat riding or driving lessons. Private, semi-private and group riding lessons are available Monday-Saturday from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Western lessons are available upon request. Mini-camps and classes on horse care and management are taught during fall, winter, spring and summer breaks. Riding lessons and practical horse care classes are taught by Dr. Sally Haydon. Both are taught in Granite Hill Stable's heated barn and indoor arena.

BGRA packages riding lessons in several different ways to accommodate all types of riders. Many riders desiring to learn saddle seat riding in a private setting may purchase "riding lesson packages." Other riders enjoy the company and social atmosphere when riding with others in our "group lesson program."

Kids ride a school bus to Granite Hill, do their homework under supervision, receive tutoring if requested by the parent (at no extra charge), then participate in an on the ground lesson in horse care. Kids may attend this program every day after school for a price competitive with other after school programs. The cost of the Horses and Homework Program is $25/day or $100/week. Riding is not included in this program however children may ride for an additional $25/day. The program was developed to promote the American Saddlebred Horse and to introduce more children to riding.

Children in the barn learning how to lead

During the lessons on horse care, children assist in the preparation of horses for riding classes including learning to groom and lead horses. Children learn practical care of the horse such as proper feeding, caring for sick or injured horses, routine health care, proper care of an equine facility, parts of the horse, anatomy of the horse, breeds of horses, colors and markings, parts of the saddle and care of the tack.

Working parents really have a tough time finding a good after school program for their children and especially one that offers tutoring and riding every day for a reasonable weekly price. There are several riding stables in the Versailles area however this program not only assures that students get their homework completed to enable more family time when they get home and professional tutoring can be requested by parents. In addition, students receive approximately an hour and a half to two hours working with horses each day of the program. If each component of this program was purchased separately, it would be well over $275 per week.
